BREAKING THE CUT
Film Documentary to raise awareness on Female Genital Mutilation

Female Genital Mutilation is a global issue, even though Africa leads with the highest number of girls mutilated (100 milion). In countries  like South Africa, which is not listed  in the World Health Organization among the countries who practice FGM, even though is practiced locally by some people,  a huge consideration must be given to the immigrants from other African countries who never really abandoned this traditional ritual. 140 million women worldwide are living the consequences of FGM and even though in many countries in condemned by the law it is still practiced.
FGM reflects deep rooted inequality between sexes, and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women. It is nearly always carried out on minors and is a violation of the rights of children. The practice also violates a person's rights to health, security and physica integrity, the right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and the right to life when the procedure results in death. The paper intend to focus on the reasons of FGM ‘ presence today in African countries where it is rooted and in the diaspora making urgent a confrontation and an open debate on the impact that FGM has in women’s identity, trying to make a point and  propose sustainable strategies to raise awareness and lead a significant change in this practice directly from inside the cultures where FGM belongs and within  the immigrant communities .
Producing this film documentary it's necessary to convey FGM as a global issue, proposing true stories, sustainable strategies,   also through the interdisciplinary languages of Art which we find the best "tool" to reach also a young target in schools.
